This book systematically considers the centrality of art and design in shaping risk perceptions and behaviours. By examining artworks as well as warnings, instructions, drills (or pre-enactments) and data visualisations, it probes the aesthetic dimension of risk as a (diagnostic) framework for articulating, narrating and expressing the complexities that living with risk entails and reimagining more fair, engaging and trustworthy processes and practices. Risk-taking has long been a declared artistic strategy and concern in the twentieth century and all of the twenty-first - with artists embracing the creative (or disruptive) forces of explosions, gravity, entropy or chance in their work or even more radically toying with danger and testing audience perception of safety and threat. Through engaging with security, warfare, public health, nuclear threats and the challenges to human rights and more than human welfare, artists have drawn attention to the pervasive presence of risks in their contemporary lives. However, no art and design book profoundly engages with the vibrant literature on risk in the social sciences and technology studies. Vice-versa, the visual arts are underexamined in risk literature, even though communicators and disaster responders rely on visuals and performative or sensory practices to 'save lives'. Scholars and practitioners are beginning to mobilise artistic techniques to 'co-create' more effective warnings, and forums, where creatives, scientists, and communities devise together practices to better prepare for disaster, are emerging.nbsp;
